Putin arrives in Turkmenistan for Caspian environmental summit

Leaders of the Caspian states are meeting in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. Their agenda includes environmental cooperation and the falling level of the Caspian Sea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Turkmenistan to attend the Caspian Environmental Summit, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported. On October 9, the Russian leader is in the country for a two-day working visit that includes a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The events are being held in the Avaza National Tourist Zone on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. After the CIS leaders’ meeting, the heads of Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Iran gathered for a meeting of the five Caspian states.
Participants are expected to discuss cooperation on environmental protection. Particular attention will be given to the falling level of the Caspian Sea. A declaration of the summit is expected to be adopted after the meeting.
