Karnataka seeks report on police action against Bengaluru protesters
D K Shivakumar has sought an explanation of police action in Bengaluru and promised accountability if excessive force is established.
His October 13 statement followed the detention of more than 100 people protesting a special revision of electoral rolls the previous day. Demonstrators had attempted to march to Karnataka's Chief Electoral Officer's office.
The Hindu reported rough handling of protesters, journalists and photographers by police. Shivakumar requested a full account of the circumstances. Findings and disciplinary decisions have not yet been announced.
The state leader said disagreement with the Election Commission, his government or him personally does not remove the right to peaceful expression. He said the state could not demand that right in Delhi while denying it in Bengaluru.
Home Minister Priyank Kharge said he had instructed police not to disrupt peaceful demonstrations. He described law enforcement's responsibility as protecting people's ability to express disagreement freely and without fear.
