Romário sides with Ronaldo in dispute with Portugal coach

Former Brazil striker Romário said he understood Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to leave Portugal’s camp if events happened as the player described.

The dispute over Ronaldo resurfaced on Football Uncensored. Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan criticized the forward’s position in Portugal’s squad and clashed with broadcaster Piers Morgan, a friend and outspoken defender of the player. Jordan told Morgan to stop “slavishly kissing his arse.” The next day, Morgan said he had shown Ronaldo the clip. According to Morgan, Ronaldo replied: “Tell him to stop getting Botox. He looks like an apple.”

The Hungarian outlet said the disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus began before the match against Norway. Ronaldo was sent to warm up but was not brought on. He took offence and left the national team camp. The outlet reported that he would not return while Jesus remained coach. Portugal have won all four matches without Ronaldo, leaving open whether the team will need the 41-year-old forward.

Romário said on a podcast that he would have done the same if he had been disrespected. He added that Ronaldo’s only mistake was not telling Jesus to go to hell before leaving. Romário said he would have spoken bluntly and directly.
