Rosreestr highlights Russia’s distinctive place names, from Dno to Zima

The agency cited settlements in Pskov, Irkutsk and other regions, while an expert said local names can spark interest in geography and language.

Rosreestr’s press service told TASS that Dno, Opochka and Pytalovo in Pskov Region, along with Zima in Irkutsk Region, are among Russian settlements with distinctive names. The list is based on the State Catalogue of Geographical Names, operated by Roskadastr.

Other places cited include Bodaibo in Irkutsk Region, Kandalaksha in Murmansk Region and Nazyvayevsk in Omsk Region. The list also names Puchezh in Ivanovo Region, Pyt-Yakh in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, Labytnangi in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area and Dagestanskiye Ogni in Dagestan.

Pavel Sklyanchuk of the People’s Front Analytics project told TASS that unusual municipal names can add a little positivity to daily life and encourage people to learn more about their country’s geography, language traditions and ancestral culture.

TASS noted that settlement names often describe local features. They may also reflect the natural environment, past or present, or the language of Indigenous residents.
