Rosreestr lists Russian towns with distinctive names

Rosreestr lists Russian towns with distinctive names

Dno, Zima, Opochka and Pytalovo are among the settlements highlighted, alongside places in Siberia, the Urals and the Caucasus.

Towns Dno, Zima, Opochka and Pytalovo were included in a list of Russian settlements with the most distinctive names, TASS reported, citing Rosreestr. The data come from the State Catalogue of Geographical Names, operated by PPK Roskadastr.

Three of the four towns are in Pskov Oblast. The list also includes Bodaibo and Zima in Irkutsk Oblast, Kandalaksha in Murmansk Oblast and Nazyvayevsk in Omsk Oblast. Other names highlighted were Puchezh in Ivanovo Oblast, Pyt-Yakh in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Labytnangi in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Dagestanskiye Ogni in Dagestan.

In April, Rosreestr published a separate list of geographical names it considered amusing. The agency said the Amur Region had the largest concentration of such names. It also cited the village of Khokhotuy in Zabaykalsky Krai, which it said has existed for 125 years. The new selection focuses on distinctive names and does not indicate a ranked order.
