India's opposition announces Delhi protest after Saturday detentions

Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal announced a large INDIA alliance protest in Delhi on Monday following detentions and restrictions during Saturday's demonstrations against electoral-roll revision.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah compared restrictions in the capital with measures used in Kashmir. Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said internet shutdowns and detentions recalled the events of August 2019.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticised the detention of young participants. Aam Aadmi Party workers led by Manish Sisodia protested outside the chief electoral officer's office in Chandigarh.

In Chennai, DMK leader M. K. Stalin demanded an end to the roll-revision exercise, the release of detainees and the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also called for demonstrations in Kerala.

Allegations of electoral manipulation were made by opposition politicians. The planned Monday demonstration has not yet taken place. Venugopal announced it after metro-station closures and detentions in Delhi.
