Kejriwal calls for wider protests after detention in New Delhi

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal called for protests across India after being detained in New Delhi on October 10. Demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police stopped Kejriwal near his Lodhi Estate residence as he sought to reach the planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Times of India and other Indian outlets confirm that the detention took place on Saturday.

In a video posted on X, the former Delhi chief minister showed other detainees, including AAP's Sanjay Singh. Participants could be heard chanting demands for Kumar to resign.

Kejriwal subsequently urged supporters to turn the protest into a nationwide movement. His appeal describes the organisers' intentions rather than confirmed demonstrations across the country.

Police increased security in central Delhi to restrict gatherings around Jantar Mantar. Times of India reported an estimate of about 5,000 detainees. That is not a final total confirmed by police, and the checked reports do not establish a precise overall count.
