Steve Smith breaks Test fielding record and reaches 223 catches

Australia's Steve Smith set the Test cricket record for catches by a fielder. He held four on the third day against South Africa on October 11, taking his career total to 223.

Smith began the day with 219 catches, one behind Joe Root. Taking Temba Bavuma's catch brought him level with the England player. A catch to dismiss David Bedingham then put him in front.

He added catches off Kyle Verreynne and Anrich Nortje. SABC's earlier report recorded an interim tally of 222, while AFP's end-of-day report confirmed 223.

South Africa finished its first innings on 284 in reply to Australia's 390. The visitors reached 33 without loss in their second innings, stretching their overall lead to 139 runs. Bad light ended play early in Durban.
