Taliban reject UN findings on detentions and ill-treatment in Afghanistan

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid rejected a new quarterly report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. Published on October 15, it records four hundred and forty-three arbitrary arrests and detentions and ninety-seven cases of ill-treatment during July–September 2026.
The UN mission said the documented incidents were linked to alleged breaches of rules governing women's hijab, beards and hairstyles, prayer attendance and music.
In a statement on X, Mujahid said the authorities' actions complied with existing laws. Responding to the detention of women over dress rules, he said the purpose was to prevent violations and correct people's behaviour.
The Taliban spokesperson accused the mission of propaganda against the authorities and demanded assessments based on accurate information. He also said the report failed to reflect government assistance, political efforts and major economic projects.
The quarterly update covers July 1 through September 30. Its ninety-seven recorded cases of ill-treatment involved men and women.
