Travel expert explains how to reduce risks around monkeys

Travel expert Natalia Anstal advised visitors to places where tourists encounter monkeys to put away shiny jewellery, watches and belongings within the animals' reach. Food and conspicuous objects can prompt attempts to take them, she said.
In comments published by NEWS.ru on October 9, Anstal stressed following the rules explained to visitors before entering a monkey forest. Animals may approach closely, touch possessions and show interest in bags. She recommended removing and securing dangling accessories, watches and earrings in advance.
She noted that bites or scratches can happen without a deliberate attack. If skin is injured, the wound should be cleaned and medical attention sought. A healthcare professional should assess the contact and decide what preventive treatment is needed.
The CDC advises travellers to avoid bites and direct contact with unfamiliar animals. After a bite or scratch, it recommends thoroughly washing the wound and seeking immediate medical care to assess rabies prevention needs. Removing jewellery alone does not make close contact with a wild animal safe.
