Trump has not agreed to meeting with Putin and Xi, WSJ reports
Donald Trump has not agreed to attend a three-way meeting with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an unnamed US official. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed discussions about a possible meeting.
Peskov said there was no clear understanding of whether the meeting would happen or what its agenda might be, although all three sides acknowledged the possibility. The US official told the newspaper that Trump might be receptive to the proposal.
The Journal reported that ending the war in Ukraine was the proposed subject. That was the newspaper’s account of the proposal, while Peskov said the agenda remained unsettled.
In early September, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov had raised the possibility of a meeting between the Russian, US and Chinese leaders on the sidelines of APEC. On August 23, he had discussed possible Putin-Trump talks if both attended the summit, noting that Washington had not sent any signals.
On October 1, Putin said the conflict should end on terms acceptable to Russia as well. In June, he had advocated negotiations based on the agreements reached in Istanbul.
The APEC summit is scheduled for November 18 to November 19 in Shenzhen, China.
