Vladivostok doctors remove 10-kilogram tumour from patient

Doctors at Vladivostok’s Maternity Hospital No. 3 removed a 10-kilogram tumour from a 56-year-old woman, Primorye’s health ministry reported on October 12.

The growth occupied the abdominal cavity up to the diaphragm, according to the ministry’s account cited by TASS. Around 13 litres of fluid were also removed during the procedure.

The surgical team included department head Elena Fedorenko and doctor Natalia Kuzora, assisted by young physician Valeria Volodina. The ministry said the operation followed techniques intended to prevent the spread of potentially malignant cells.

The patient had sought help after rapid growth of the tumour substantially affected her quality of life. She has since been discharged home.

The removed tissue was sent for histological examination to clarify the diagnosis. The published account does not establish whether the tumour was malignant or give the exact date of the operation.
