Washington beats Pittsburgh in season home opener

The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 in their first home game of the new NHL season. Alexander Ovechkin’s sons, Sergei and Ilya, announced his name as the team came onto the ice.

The game in the U.S. capital ended 2-1, 2-2 and 1-0 by period. Anthony Beauvillier, Tom Wilson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Alex Tuch and Ryan Leonard scored for Washington. Bryan Rust, Tommy Novak and Nicholas Robertson scored for Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin played 14 minutes and 5 seconds, had two shots on goal and recorded one hit. The Russian captain did not score a point. Washington earned its second win of the season, while Pittsburgh lost for the second straight game.
