Carney reaffirms sanctions after discussing US-Russia diesel deal with Zelenskyy

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the US-Russia diesel supply agreement with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 11 and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to maintaining sanctions.

Carney’s office said he viewed the agreement as contrary to efforts by Ukraine, Canada and their allies to secure peace and stability in Europe. Its statement argued that additional export revenue would help Russia finance the war.

Carney assured Zelenskyy that Canada would maintain sanctions and tighten them where effective. His office did not announce specific new restrictions or a timetable for introducing them.

The call followed Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel agreement with Vladimir Putin. The Canadian readout sets out Ottawa’s position on the deal but does not report any change to its terms.
