Tushar Gandhi released after ten-hour detention ahead of Mumbai protest

Activist Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, was detained in Mumbai on October 10 ahead of a protest against revisions to electoral rolls and released about ten hours later, Indian media reported.

The Times of India and Free Press Journal reported that police detained Gandhi around 9:30 a.m. near National College in Bandra and released him around 7:30 p.m. Demonstrators had planned to gather at August Kranti Maidan in solidarity with protests in Delhi.

Protesters demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, known as SIR. The reports said police also detained other participants in Mumbai.

The Times of India reported 92 detentions during an attempt to hold an unauthorised rally in Pune and 26 in Nashik. In Guwahati, about 300 people gathered in solidarity, but police prevented a procession. Those figures describe separate city-level events rather than a nationwide detention total.
