Delhi police arrest four over alleged assault during election protest

Delhi police said on October 11 that they had arrested four men over an alleged assault on protesters during the previous day's demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police identified the men as Raman Saini, 50, Vivekanand, also known as Vivek, 32, Kapil Kumar, 27, and Ravinder Singh, also known as Govind Hindu, 35. The Hindu reported that the men claimed links to the right-wing Hindu Raksha Dal.

The alleged incident took place on DDU Marg, within Kamla Market police station's jurisdiction. A video circulated online that purportedly showed students being assaulted and women being pushed and hit. The report also described a police officer at the scene.

Police said they had received no formal complaint but initiated action after the footage came to their attention. Officers established the location, traced the men and arrested them following information that they might leave the Delhi-NCR region to evade action.

The demonstration was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party and other organisations opposing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demanding Kumar's resignation. The arrests constitute a separate development from the detention of protest organisers and participants.
