EU approves 22nd sanctions package against Russia
The Council of the European Union announced the new listings on October 12. Its official statement says they target Russia's military-industrial companies and their executives.
The Council said the listed companies supplied key components for missiles, drones and aircraft. It described the decision as its largest package of new additions to sanctions lists.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced approval by foreign ministers. The announcement marks adoption of the restrictions, rather than further discussion of the proposal reported earlier.
The additions follow the 21st package adopted in late July, which covered financial, energy and defence sectors. Banks, vessels and companies named in that earlier package should not be treated as new targets of the October decision.
Moscow rejects the EU's sanctions policy and considers the restrictions unlawful. That position differs from the Council's justification, which links the latest measures to Russia's continuing war against Ukraine.
