Falkov outlines study lengths under Russia's new higher-education model

Programmes under Russia's new higher-education model will last four to six years depending on the complexity of the specialism, Valery Falkov said. The science and higher education minister also said master's programmes would vary from one to three years.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Falkov explained that future doctors, teachers and engineers would study longer than tourism-sector specialists. Programme length would reflect the requirements of the profession.

The ministry plans to complete the gradual university transition by 2030, a deadline the minister outlined previously. The pilot began in 2023 and now involves 17 universities.

The existing pilot provides basic higher education lasting four to six years and specialised education lasting one to two years. Falkov's stated range for master's study concerns the new model. His statement does not mean the duration of every existing programme changes simultaneously.
