M.K. Somashekar seeks investigation of odour at Mysuru waste plant

Former legislator M.K. Somashekar visited the waste management plant at Vidyaranyapuram in Mysuru on October 10 after residents complained of a strong smell. He called for its cause to be identified and addressed, The Hindu reported.
Somashekar said residents of Vidyaranyapuram, Kanakagiri, Chamundipuram, J.P. Nagar, Nachanahallipalya, Kuvempunagar and Ashokapuram had complained for a week. He said repeated telephone calls prompted his visit and asked officials why the smell had emerged after three years in which, according to his account, similar problems had not been reported.
He suggested that problems with biological waste treatment could be responsible. Somashekar urged officials to investigate that possibility, establish the cause and ensure proper waste segregation and processing. His suggestion about the treatment method was not an established finding.
The former legislator also asked municipal commissioner M.K. Savitha to resolve the problem urgently. Former Vidyaranyapuram municipal councillor M. Sunil supported that request. He said residents called every day and warned that continuing odours would worsen hardship in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
