Iran reports container ship sinking in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on October 14 that a container ship struck a mine, caught fire and sank in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel’s identity and the claimed cause were not independently established in that announcement.
Interfax, citing Mehr, reported the Guard’s claim that the ship carried 2,500 containers and entered an area it described as prohibited. The Guard warned about floating containers in the southern waters of the strait.
Separately, Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority confirmed that the Singapore-registered GFS Pride had sunk after a reported strike by an unknown projectile. It said all crew members were evacuated without reported injuries.
The Singapore authority also reported damage to GFS Giselle, which reached a safe anchorage. Associated Press said it was unclear whether the ship in Iran’s mine claim was the same vessel whose sinking Singapore confirmed.
