JetSMART flight diverted to Antofagasta after emergency signal

A JetSMART passenger flight from Santiago to Trujillo diverted to Antofagasta after transmitting an emergency signal off Chile's coast on October 10. Flight-tracking records confirm that JA850, also identified as JAT850, changed its destination.
The Airbus had departed Santiago for Trujillo in Peru before turning toward Antofagasta in northern Chile. RIA Novosti reported, citing flight data, that it landed at Andrés Sabella Gálvez International Airport at 03:44 UTC.
Flightradar24's history lists the October 10 service from Santiago to Trujillo as diverted to Antofagasta. The commercial flight number JA850 and the identifier JAT850 refer to the same JetSMART service.
The aircraft transmitted transponder code 7700, a general emergency signal. The code alerts air traffic controllers to an emergency but does not identify its cause or, by itself, establish that a crash is imminent.
