Karnataka chief minister says talks brought ‘good news’ on pending state dues

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said he had received “some good news” about money owed to the state after talks with India’s finance minister, but declined to disclose details.

Shivakumar spoke to reporters in Delhi after a meeting of the Goods and Services Tax Council. He said the meeting had gone well and that Karnataka’s concerns had received broad support.

Sources cited by The Hindu said the news may concern 53 billion rupees allocated to the Upper Bhadra Project in the federal budget for 2023-24. Shivakumar did not publicly confirm that amount.

The meeting also discussed criminal proceedings and arrests for failure to pay GST. Shivakumar said officials should not use arrests indiscriminately and should focus first on recovering dues under the applicable rules. He said all but one state supported that position during the discussion.
