South Korea's Lee seeks more direct communication with the public

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung intends to communicate more actively and directly with the public, his senior communications secretary said on October 11. The comments came amid criticism of the frequency of Lee's social media posts.
Seong Ghi-hong said Lee expressed that intention on his flight back to Seoul after a state visit to Mexico in late September. In a public explanation, Seong described the aim as reducing the distance between citizens and the president.
The official said social media was one of several channels for public communication. He presented the approach as an effort to make state affairs more accessible to citizens rather than a political strategy confined to online posts.
Lee has recently posted more frequently about political, diplomatic and real estate issues. In a Saturday post on X, he said he would continue that dialogue despite criticism questioning the dignity and authority of communicating in that way.
