Police investigate alleged attack on West Bengal legislator

Trinamool Congress demanded an investigation on October 11 into an alleged attack on legislator Bibhas Sardar in Jaynagar. It accused BJP supporters, while the BJP denied that its workers were involved.

Sardar represents Baruipur Purba in West Bengal's legislative assembly. His party says the attack took place on the evening of October 10 as he returned home from a party programme in South 24 Parganas. The legislator said he received death threats over his support for Mamata Banerjee.

The Indian Express, citing police sources, reported that Sardar's vehicle was targeted at two locations within Jaynagar police station's jurisdiction. Officers escorted him out of the area, and he was taken to hospital in Baruipur. Sardar alleged damage to his car and physical assault and filed a police complaint.

Local BJP representative Sandeep Nair rejected the allegations and offered a different account, linking the incident to residents' anger over the legislator's conduct. Those counterclaims have also not been established by investigators.

MP Abhishek Banerjee telephoned Sardar and offered assistance, Trinamool Congress said. Police have begun an investigation. Party workers' involvement and the precise circumstances of the alleged attack remain unestablished.
