Matsushita sets short-course 400m individual medley world record
Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita swam 3 minutes, 54.33 seconds in the 400m individual medley at the national championships in Saga on October 11. He lowered compatriot Daiya Seto's world record by 0.48 seconds.
The previous mark of 3:54.81 had stood since 2019. Seto established it on December 20 at an International Swimming League event in Las Vegas, according to EFE.
Matsushita's new time was recorded in a 25-metre pool. Short-course records are a separate category from results over the same distance in a 50-metre pool.
Matsushita won silver in the long-course 400m individual medley at the Paris Olympics. He also finished second at the 2025 world championships. On both occasions, the Japanese swimmer was beaten by France's Leon Marchand.
