Moscow expands advanced physics and mathematics classes

More than 6,600 Moscow pupils have joined a new advanced physics and mathematics programme for grades 7–9, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said. The initiative operates in more than 160 educational institutions.
Launched this academic year, the programme is intended to prepare pupils for further engineering education through deeper study of technical subjects. Sobyanin linked that knowledge to the need for skilled personnel and the country’s technological sovereignty.
According to the mayor, more than 20,000 ninth-graders chose physics for their basic state examination in 2026. That was three thousand more than a year earlier, placing the expansion of classes alongside growing interest in the subject as an examination choice.
Sobyanin also reported an increase in eleventh-graders taking physics in the unified state examination and an improvement in the quality of their knowledge. He had separately said that about 56,000 Moscow pupils study in pre-professional classes. That figure covers the broader preparation system, rather than only the new physics and mathematics programme.
