Nepal flash flood destroys homes, leaving at least five missing

A destructive flash flood struck central Nepal's Gorkha district on October 11. A later report from the national disaster authority put the number of people missing at at least five.

Water surged along the Budhi Gandaki river after a landslide temporarily blocked its channel. Authorities evacuated residents of riverside settlements and urged others to move to safer areas.

Lakshmi Gurung, deputy chair of Chumanubri municipality, told Xinhua that at least 40 homes in five settlements had been swept away. An early report also described two destroyed bridges. Initial damage assessments differ between reports and remain subject to revision.

Kathmandu Post initially reported four people missing. The national disaster authority later gave a figure of at least five. These are people whose whereabouts have not been established, rather than a confirmed death toll.
