South Korea plans to expand language resources for artificial intelligence while promoting Hangeul, Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said at a ceremony on October 9 marking the centenary of Hangeul Day.
The government aims to increase the number of Korean-language corpora used to train AI from 174 to 340 by 2030. It also plans to expand the network of King Sejong Institutes, which teach Korean overseas, from 273 to more than 350, Han said.
Han, a former chief executive of Naver, said language technology is becoming more important as it helps people interact with AI.
Separately, National Hangeul Museum director Lim Seong-hwan told Yonhap the museum is scheduled to reopen in 2028. It closed after a fire in February 2025. Lim said a construction company would be selected following a safety inspection, with work expected to begin at the end of the year.
