South Korean police expand team investigating attacks on banks

South Korean police said on October 9 that they had added 15 personnel to the team investigating cyberattacks on financial institutions. The group previously had 28 members.
The National Office of Investigation assigned the additional staff to cases involving several financial companies, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank. The expansion brings the team's strength to 43 people.
The reinforcements include digital forensic experts. Police are using international cooperation to trace the path of the cyberattacks. The additional personnel are intended to strengthen law enforcement's capacity to investigate the series of breaches.
The announcement followed President Lee Jae Myung's instruction on Tuesday, October 6, to dedicate more personnel and resources to preventing further attacks and minimizing damage from the recent incidents. Yonhap reported the team's expansion, citing police.
