Kalyn Ponga looks ahead to New Zealand Rugby League World Cup debut

Kalyn Ponga says representing New Zealand at the Rugby League World Cup will be a major step in his career and connection to his family roots. His debut is expected against Australia in Sydney on October 15.

Following Newcastle Knights’ 19–18 NRL grand final defeat by Sydney Roosters, Ponga joined the national squad at Coogee Beach. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the 28-year-old fullback said there was nowhere else he would rather be.

State of Origin eligibility changes announced in February and effective from October 1 allowed Ponga and fellow Queensland Maroons and Knights player Dane Gagai to represent the Kiwis for the first time. The opening match will be played at Allianz Stadium.

Born in Western Australia, Ponga lived in Queensland before moving to Palmerston North with his New Zealand-born parents. He credits his family and eight years of Māori All Stars camps with strengthening his cultural connection.

He expects his first appearance, including the haka, to be emotional for his relatives. He also expressed enthusiasm about playing behind a forward pack featuring James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota and Naufahu Whyte.

A possible opposing fullback is James Tedesco, who won the Clive Churchill Medal after the NRL decider. Australia coach Kevin Walters could also select Reece Walsh, so that matchup depends on the team selection. Jahrome Hughes, returning to international rugby league after two years interrupted by injuries, said he was looking forward to playing alongside Ponga.
