Restored Polivanov gymnasium building reopens in Moscow

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has reopened the historic Polivanov gymnasium building on Prechistenka following restoration. It houses the Muradeli children’s music school and Serov children’s art school, which together teach more than 1.2 thousand pupils.

Restoration and adaptation for modern teaching took place in 2024–2026. The building forms part of the federally protected Stepanov House and Polivanov Gymnasium heritage ensemble dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The music school received more than 800 items of equipment and interior furnishings, while the art school received more than 1.6 thousand items of equipment, according to the mayor’s office.

Spacious classrooms have been equipped for painting and drawing. The large concert hall is intended for examinations, student performances and events involving professional musicians.

Sobyanin said Moscow’s arts-school renewal programme was nearly complete, with 160 schools reconstructed. The Muradeli and Serov schools have occupied the historic building for more than 70 years.
