Rostelecom executive proposes reserve data centre for service recovery

Rostelecom executive Valery Yermakov proposed creating a reserve data centre for restoring services after major disruptions. Speaking at RBC Tech on October 14, he described the facility as a “doomsday” data centre.
The proposal centres on backup copies that would allow service providers to recover operations. Yermakov said arrangements once considered unnecessary had become a practical requirement as the range of threats changed rapidly.
He argued that concentrating key services at a few sites had delivered economies of scale and simpler management, but now created vulnerabilities. He cited drone threats and recent problems affecting Yandex as examples informing that assessment.
His remarks set out an infrastructure concept, rather than announcing a construction project. No location, cost or commissioning date was given. The proposed reserve facility’s role would be recovery of services from backups.
