Rubio links Ukraine election discussion to US frustration

Marco Rubio said frustration with Kyiv had brought Ukraine's elections into the discussion. Speaking to Breitbart, the US secretary of state said elections alone would not address why the war continues.

Rubio cited complaints from American companies about strikes on ships carrying their oil in the Black Sea. He said these had occurred despite Washington's requests.

He added that he did not believe Ukraine had intentionally targeted American cargoes.

Ukraine's regular presidential election was due in 2024. It was not held under martial law, during which legislation prohibits such elections.

The secretary also described US frustration with Russia. He said Donald Trump did not want to see civilians killed in missile strikes on apartment buildings in Kyiv.
