Russian Duma committee plans to help draft CIS cross-border telemedicine law

The Russian State Duma’s Health Protection Committee plans to join work on a model law for cross-border telemedicine consultations among CIS countries, committee head Vladimir Sysoev told RIA Novosti.

Sysoev described the initiative after meeting Turkmenistan’s parliament speaker, Dunyagozel Gulmanova, on the sidelines of a conference on universal health coverage and sustainable development goals in the Avaza tourist zone.

They discussed access to primary care, staffing needs in the health sector and cross-border telemedicine systems, Sysoev said. He said Russian medical centers and doctors were already in demand abroad and argued that a model law could help health professionals in CIS countries obtain consultations from Russian specialists more quickly, including for complex cases.

Sysoev cited a 2025 CIS cooperation concept on public health, which includes the use of telemedicine and information technologies in medical care. The proposed model law is still at the planning stage. RIA Novosti did not report a timetable for drafting it or its legal status.
