Russian ministry discusses 1 Gbit/s internet availability in apartment buildings

Russia's digital development ministry intends to include a requirement in its telecoms reform allowing households in every apartment building to order internet speeds of at least 1 Gbit/s within ten years.
Deputy Minister Dmitry Ugnivenko announced the proposal at the Digital Solutions forum on 9 October. The reform is being prepared and discussed. The proposal concerns the availability of such a connection for subscribers.
Ugnivenko said each apartment building would need at least one switch with 10 Gbit/s capacity. He said the requirements would help operators plan equipment purchases and manufacturers assess their market and organise production.
The deputy minister described the task as medium-term planning and stressed that it would not be completed in a couple of years. The forum runs at the Russia National Centre from 6 to 10 October.
