Ryanair chief forecasts European air fares could rise up to 20% in 2027
Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary predicts European air fares could rise by up to 20% in 2027. Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, he linked the outlook to high fuel costs amid the war in the Middle East.
O’Leary said the next 12 months could bring the largest increase in European air fares on record. He doubted that higher fares and fuel surcharges would fully offset the rise in airlines’ costs.
He said most European airlines, including Ryanair, were insufficiently protected against higher oil prices through hedging. He also cited rising taxes and criticised regulation in France and Belgium, where Ryanair plans to reduce its presence.
O’Leary expects further consolidation in the industry, saying weaker carriers face growing difficulties operating with high costs.
In September, Ryanair lowered its passenger forecast for the current financial year and announced plans to reduce the number of seats offered during the winter season.
