New Riyadh airport attack kills one and injures 11
One person was killed and 11 were injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 11. Saudi aviation authorities reported the casualties, according to DW.
The Saudi-led coalition said an unidentified projectile hit Terminal 4 and caused a fire. It also reported intercepting a cruise missile near the airport. The initial announcement did not explain how the incidents were connected.
The new strike followed an attack on October 10. Reuters initially reported 12 people killed and more than 300 wounded in Saturday's incident. According to the agency, the dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and people from other countries. Those figures concern the earlier attack, rather than October 11.
The airport remained closed after Saturday's strike. Before the latest attack, the Houthis warned airlines and travellers that Saudi airports and airspace could be targeted, making exceptions for Mecca and Medina.
Despite the airport closure, Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said an international energy congress in Riyadh would proceed. State television reported that more than 70 ministers, 300 company executives and representatives of over 25 international energy organisations had confirmed attendance. It was unclear how many would attend in person.
Authorities also announced a switch to remote learning for students and education staff from Sunday through Thursday. Saudi Arabia has stepped up military operations against the Houthis and support for Yemen's internationally recognised government in recent weeks.
