Von der Leyen announces more EU funding for Ukrainian drones and missiles

Ursula von der Leyen said on October 11 that the European Union would provide Ukraine with additional funding for drones and missiles. The European Commission president made the announcement after a telephone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In her statement on X, von der Leyen linked the support to strengthening Ukraine's defences and protecting its airspace. RIA Novosti and ANSA carried the announcement. Her quoted remarks did not specify the amount or its funding source.

Ukraine's financial needs for the following year are also due to be discussed by the European Council on October 15-16. European leaders intend to examine ways to mobilise further international support.

The announcement describes forthcoming assistance rather than a completed transfer. Von der Leyen also said the opening of two more clusters in Ukraine's EU accession negotiations was expected.
