Zverev says ankle discomfort worsened during Shanghai win over Bublik

Alexander Zverev said his ankle discomfort intensified during his fourth-round victory over Alexander Bublik at the Shanghai Masters on October 13.

The German player said he had also felt discomfort in his previous match. His ankle felt fine during the warm-up and the opening set against Bublik, but deteriorated as the match progressed, particularly midway through the second set.

Zverev nevertheless completed the match and won 7–6 (8–6), 4–6, 7–6 (7–1). He said he was pleased to have held on and did not want to withdraw without a reason.

He recalled being unable to walk when he retired at Roland Garros in 2022. His comments in Shanghai did not include a medical diagnosis or an announcement that he would withdraw from the tournament. His quarter-final opponent is Australia’s Alex de Minaur.
