Chwalinska beats Sakkari to reach Wuhan semifinals

Poland’s Maja Chwalinska defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the Wuhan WTA 1000 quarterfinals on October 16, winning 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

The match lasted two hours and 35 minutes. Chwalinska, ranked No. 22 and seeded 16th, took the opening set without losing a game before Sakkari levelled the match. The Polish player then won the deciding set 7-5.

According to the Women’s Tennis Association, this is Chwalinska’s third semifinal at tour level and her first on outdoor hard courts. She will enter the Top 20 for the first time on Monday.

Chwalinska’s next opponent will be fellow Pole Iga Swiatek, the association reported. It will be the first all-Polish semifinal at a WTA 1000 tournament.
