Digital ministry helps Yandex secure sites for systems relocation after attacks

Russia’s Digital Development Ministry helped Yandex obtain additional sites after attacks on its data centres, minister Maksut Shadayev told RBC on October 14.
Shadayev said the company rapidly moved its key systems to backup capacity prepared in advance. He described the attacks on the data centres as unprecedented.
He said distributing backup sites geographically reduced dependence on individual large facilities and helped maintain service availability despite serious damage. That is the minister’s assessment of the role of redundancy.
Restoration work was continuing, according to Shadayev, with the company moving its remaining systems to third-party sites. Relocating key systems and completing restoration of the entire infrastructure are therefore separate stages.
His statement did not disclose the sites’ addresses, their capacity or a deadline for the remaining work. The minister did not announce that every service had been fully restored.
