Federation Council appoints Oleg Nefedov deputy chair of Russia’s Supreme Court

Russia’s Federation Council appointed Oleg Nefedov deputy chair of the Supreme Court and head of its civil cases judicial panel on October 14. Senators voted at a plenary session.
Senators also appointed Larisa Shelomanova, Eduard Kaminsky and Lyubov Besschasnaya as Supreme Court judges. Interfax and the Russian Legal Information Agency’s reporter at the session reported the completed vote.
Supreme Court chair Igor Krasnov presented the candidates. According to the agency, he said they met professional requirements and possessed the qualities necessary to administer justice.
Answering senators’ questions, Nefedov said the Supreme Court intended to use artificial intelligence technologies. He stressed that they would not replace a judge. His remarks concerned technology in judicial work, rather than delegating decision-making powers to it.
