Google Ireland challenges 160.3 billion ruble recovery order in Russia's Supreme Court

Google Ireland challenges 160.3 billion ruble recovery order in Russia's Supreme Court

The company is seeking review of rulings in a dispute over the Russian Google subsidiary's funds. Its cassation appeal arrived on October 12, RIA Novosti reported.

The dispute forms part of the bankruptcy of Google LLC in Russia. In February, the Moscow Arbitration Court granted administrator Valery Talyarovsky's request to invalidate changes to advertising contracts and related payments to Google Ireland.

The court ordered recovery of about 101.7 billion rubles plus roughly 58.6 billion rubles in interest, totaling about 160.3 billion. The disputed payments, which exceeded 373.7 billion rubles, are not the same as the amount awarded.

The administrator argued that the new contract reduced the Russian company's retained share of advertising resale revenue from 20% to 3%. The defendants said the previous terms had become uncompetitive over nine years.

An appeal court in June and the district arbitration court in August left the original order unchanged. The Russian Google LLC was declared bankrupt in October 2023.

Filing the cassation appeal continues the challenge. The report does not establish that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear it or overturned the recovery order.
