Louisville defeat adds pressure on Florida State coach Mike Norvell

Florida State lost 44-20 to Louisville on October 9 after building a 14-0 lead. The collapse renewed questions about coach Mike Norvell’s position amid contractual costs and a change in the athletics department’s leadership.
The turning point followed Florida State’s failed fourth-down attempt near Louisville’s end zone. On the next play, Isaac Brown broke free for a 97-yard touchdown run. He later added a 68-yard rushing touchdown and finished with 235 yards on the ground.
Official statistics show Louisville gained 397 rushing yards and 537 total yards. After Florida State scored two first-quarter touchdowns, the home side took control. It was another defeat for Norvell’s team after a substantial early advantage.
CBS Sports identifies the cost of terminating Norvell’s contract as a complication in dismissing the coach. Compensation would require substantial spending before payments to assistants and the expense of hiring a replacement and a new staff.
CBS Sports reporters Chris Hummer and John Talty put Florida State’s spending on its 2026 roster at just over $20 million. That is the outlet’s estimate, which places the programme in the middle of the ACC by that measure and below several national championship contenders.
The university dismissed athletics director Michael Alford in September, with Bruce Warwick taking over on an interim basis. CBS Sports suggests that the lack of a permanent leader and a review of athletics funding could also influence the timing of a coaching decision.
The outlet sees the remaining schedule as a chance for Norvell to improve results, with games against Clemson, Boston College, Pittsburgh and NC State. That remains a forecast: a strong finish would not by itself guarantee that he retains the job.
