Penza researchers develop experimental collagen sponge

Penza State University researchers are developing a collagen sponge intended to combine bleeding control, clot stabilisation and local antibacterial action. It remains an experimental material.
Gazeta.Ru reported the work on October 13, citing Russia's Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The material uses a porous three-dimensional collagen matrix intended to absorb fluid and support blood clot formation.
The composition includes aminocaproic acid to limit premature clot breakdown. Vancomycin and ciprofloxacin provide the intended antibacterial component, with local release from the material.
Active substances are introduced while the raw material swells. The matrix is then frozen and freeze-dried. Researchers are continuing laboratory optimisation of the formulation and manufacturing process.
The next objective is a prototype with reproducible characteristics and further evaluation of its properties. The report concerns laboratory development and does not establish clinical effectiveness in patients, regulatory approval as a medical device or use in hospitals.
