Police register three cases after youth clashes in Adoor
Police in Adoor, India, registered three cases following clashes between youth activists on October 10. Former legislator Rahul Mamkootathil was named in one case and denies assaulting anyone.
Police said tensions followed college union elections at the College of Engineering and escalated during a rally by supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) backing leaders detained in Delhi.
The first case concerns an alleged attack on two Kerala Students Union leaders outside a medical shop in Ezhamkulam at about 7 p.m. Police named seven Students Federation of India and Democratic Youth Federation of India activists.
The second concerns an alleged assault on two Students Federation of India activists at Adoor General Hospital at about 10:50 p.m. Police said Mamkootathil and 26 others were named in that case. The third involves an alleged attack on a Youth Congress worker at a private hospital at about 11:30 p.m.
Mamkootathil told reporters that he intervened because the injured activists were his friends, but denied attacking anyone. He blamed opposing activists for the initial assault. Police said they were working to reduce tensions and prevent further clashes. The allegations remain under investigation.
