Fernando Mendoza makes NFL debut against the Patriots

The first overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft, Fernando Mendoza, made his regular-season debut for the Las Vegas Raiders on October 11. His team lost 45–17 to the New England Patriots.

Mendoza replaced Kirk Cousins in the fourth quarter with just over six minutes remaining. The rookie completed six of eight passes for 48 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

His first five passes were completed. At the end of his only possession, Mendoza tried to gain the necessary yards on a fourth-down scramble but fell short, turning the ball over to New England.

Before being replaced, Cousins completed 19 of 28 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown. Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, began the season as his backup.

The Patriots recorded their second consecutive victory. Both teams now have three wins and two losses. For the Raiders, who opened the season with three wins, it was a second straight defeat.
