Ronaldo handed 30-day suspension for leaving Portugal camp

The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary council suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days and fined him 255 euros for leaving the national team’s training camp.

The Portugal captain left the squad in Copenhagen on September 30 before a Nations League match against Denmark, following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.

In the preceding match against Norway, Jesus sent the forward to warm up but kept him on the bench. The coach then publicly said Ronaldo would not play against Denmark either.

Ronaldo later said Jesus had twice broken their agreement by not bringing him on and by not publicly explaining what had happened, as promised. The player apologized to the squad and supporters and said he did not intend to retire from international football.

Portugal’s next Nations League match against Denmark is scheduled for November 14. A Bola reported that Ronaldo would be eligible for that fixture given the suspension period relating to the September incident.
