The Norwegian Nobel Committee is due to name the 2026 laureate at 11 a.m. local time on October 9. The 287 nominees include individuals and organizations, but their identities will remain secret for 50 years.
The announcement will be made at the Nobel Institute in Oslo. The Associated Press and the Nobel Peace Center say 287 candidates, including organizations, were nominated this year. Nominees’ identities are kept secret for 50 years, so public discussion of possible winners is based on expert speculation rather than an official list.
Ahead of the announcement, commentators have floated humanitarian groups in Sudan, advocates for children in Ukraine, Save the Children and international courts as possible laureates. These are predictions only, and the committee has not confirmed its choice. The committee says outside pressure does not determine its decision.
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly said he deserves the award and claimed to have ended several wars. Experts interviewed by AFP have discussed how the committee’s choice might be received at the White House. Last year’s laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, gave her medal to Trump, but that did not secure his political backing for her.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for December 10. Laureates receive a diploma, a gold medal and a cash award of US$1.2 million.
