Weidel urges consideration of Russian security interests in Ukraine settlement

Alternative for Germany co-leader Alice Weidel told The Economist that a peace settlement in Ukraine should take account of both Ukrainian and Russian security interests.
Weidel described the failure to recognise Russian security concerns over the past 20 years as a mistake. She argued that Ukraine could not defeat Russia and that continuing to finance the conflict was wrong. The interview was released on October 15, and RBC reported her comments on October 16.
Discussing Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's agreement on Russian diesel supplies, Weidel said she would like Germany to reach a similar arrangement.
Trump announced the agreement on October 9. The US Treasury temporarily authorised the relevant deliveries until April 7, 2027. According to the American president, Russia would supply more than 1.8 million tonnes, with the possibility of a further 3 million tonnes.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz ruled out a comparable deal for Germany and said Berlin would continue to observe sanctions. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also opposed easing restrictions on Russia.
